Travel Day

I thought I would give the blog typing a go after realizing last nights "king" birthday blog had nothing to do with me turning 32 this week.

Today was travel day. Up early and at the train station by six am to meet the van we were going to ride with to Cambodia. We were supposed to meet the driver outside KFC (yeah, you know what that stands for) at 7:00 am. 7:45 rolls around and up pulls the van ready to meet us at eight. The driver hand picked me to ride shotgun, which I assumed means he naturally selected the person most qualified for navigator (re: Megs earlier post discussing map reading). Off we we went with Yum (the driver) and eight other tourists. One of which was a Chinese Russian guy that was watching cartoons and laughing out loud....finally he feel asleep.

No seat belts, 130 Km/hr, two lane highway, endless encounters where three vehicles were parallel on the road. Yum didn't speak English and no Thai for me so our communication consisted of Yum flooring it when I grabbed the overhead handle and Yum being the executive decision maker when my eyes were closed. Meanwhile Meg was entertaining all her new friends.

In summary, we made the supposed to be six hour trip in 10 1/2 hours in one piece. Saw the country life style, flood impacts, and corrupt border actions. Off to Angkor Wat tomorrow.

  2. Kevin Here - Meg, your pic in the back of Yum's van is freaking hilarious. It looks like your ability to entertain your new friends was not impactful as they are all asleep. Paul, priceless writing about the van excursion. Be safe and enjoy your adventure.
