Paul made a friend today. He isn't sure of his new friends name, but he first saw him 3 days ago in scuba school. This afternoon, while 40 feet below sea level, Paul decides it is a prime opportunity to introduce himself. Waving vigorously in front of his friends mask in what Paul believed to be the international sign for " hi, sorry I didn't introduce myself 3 days ago, but hi. I'm Paul. What is your name?"
Paul's friend thought this international sign meant "shit dude, I'm 40 feet under water and out of oxygen"
As of today, Paul is not PADI certified. He probably will not have a lasting friendship with our classmate who is still recovering from this afternoon's introduction to Scuba Kong either.
Tomorrow is our final exam and 2 dives to about 55 feet. I am impressed with the program and, despite the awkward exchange underwater today, we are both feeling pretty comfortable.
Koh Tao is the # 1 place in the world for Scuba Certifications. With over 50 dive companies on an island only about 15 km circumference, this means high quality and low price. The Open Water course drills in the safety fundamentals. Note to science teachers everywhere: it isn't called The Bends anymore and has lost it's # 1 spot on the safety concerns list. The main concern is actually blowing up a lung when ascending. This is easy to prevent by simply exhaling, but a main cause for anxiety. If the instructor doesn't see bubbles while you're going up, you can expect a punch in the gut to force it out. Safety first, violent offense second I guess.

Pre dive Paul

Post dive relief...and hair...

Hope all is well back home. Wish us luck on the exam. If Paul gets a higher score I imagine he will be blogging tomorrow-so stay tuned for that.
